A common question

Counselling or coaching? Here is the difference.

One looks inward and works things through. One looks forward and builds. And you do not have to choose alone.

What is the actual difference?

Counselling looks back and inward. It helps a young person work through emotional and social difficulties: anxiety, low confidence, a parental separation, friendship trouble. The struggles often stem from something experienced, whether long ago or last term, and counselling gives a safe space to work them through.

Coaching looks forward. Nothing needs to be wrong to start. It suits the young person who feels unmotivated, stuck, or unsure what comes next, and builds motivation, direction, and follow-through from what is already there.

Timeframes differ too: counselling usually runs three months to a year, while coaching runs as a shorter program, typically five to ten sessions.

Which one does my child need?

You do not have to decide, and you cannot really choose wrong. The assessment at the start usually makes the right approach clear, and because sessions are tailored to your child, the two can blend. Let your child's needs determine the course, not the label.

Why do some teens prefer coaching?

Some young people resist counselling because it feels like an admission that something is broken. Coaching carries no such story: it is forward-looking, goal-shaped, and puts them in charge. For a reluctant teen, coaching is often the door that opens, and if deeper work is needed, trust is already built by then.

Counselling fits when

  • Anxiety, worry, or low mood is the main event
  • Something happened: a loss, a separation, bullying, a scare
  • Confidence has been worn down over time
  • Feelings arrive faster than your child can manage them

Coaching fits when

  • A capable teen is stuck, flat, or drifting
  • Organization and follow-through keep failing
  • The question is direction: school, college, what next
  • Your teen wants practical progress, not talking about feelings
